Family Papers

These will generally take invested research as they are original papers and not transcribed. There is no guarantee that there will be information of enslaved individuals present in these papers, but it is generally recognized that the owners of the plantations would retain some information in their paperwork.

This photograph is a treasured part of my family's personal collection. It features my great grandfather operating the tractor, while the identities of the three other gentlemen remain unknown. They were engaged in clearing the land near Wither’s Bridge, an area that has since become a part of Lake Wylie. This effort was significant as it preceded the damming of the Catawba River, which ultimately contributed to the creation of Lake Wylie. I’m glad of my personal knowledge of the contributions my ancestors made to the Steele Creek area of Mecklenburg County, but this particular picture reminds me, of us, that there are others that had a great part in it too.
