Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church
Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church has a rich historical background, having been founded in 1836 under the leadership of Rev. Samuel L. Watson, who was the pastor of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church at the time. The establishment of this church was a response to the logistical challenges faced by members living in the lower section of the pastorate's area. Recognizing the difficulties especially during periods of impassable roads, Rev. Watson sought the approval of the Concord Presbytery to create a separate church, leading to the formation of Pleasant Hill on November 15, 1836, with an initial membership of 42 individuals.
Among its early members, Baccus, a servant of Mrs. Jane Boyd, stands out as the first person of color to join the church. Historical records indicate that through the Civil War, individuals who served white members were welcomed into the congregation, receiving baptism and communion as part of their participation in church life. This aspect of Pleasant Hill's early history reflects the complexities of social structures of the time, as well as an emerging sense of community among its diverse members.
Below you will find several different records. Firstly, I have transcribed the church records and session book. Secondly, I have abstracted the records of persons of color from this transcription to allow for easier research.
There is a second record book spanning the years 1866 to 1899 that I am currently working to transcribe. That will be added once it is complete.
This particular record can be found in Ancestry if you have a subscription.
